Mala hidroelektrarna Melje

The Melje Small Hydro Power Plant

The Melje Small Hydro Power Plant is inseparably connected to the operation of the Zlatoličje HPP, since it operates by exploiting the biological minimum of water, which has to be discharged into the Drava riverbed at the Melje dam. Already during the construction of the Zlatoličje HPP between 1964 and 1969, a small power unit was planned on the Melje dam, however, it was constructed only in 1988. In order to fully exploit the prescribed discharge into the Drava riverbed of 10 m3/s in winter and 20 m3/s in summer, a second unit, installed in the newly-erected building on the right side of the dam, was added in 2008. The annual output of the Melje Small HPP is approximately 8.69 GWh.

The Melje dam, which marks the end of the 6.5 km long artificial lake and the beginning of the Zlatoličje HPP's feeder canal, provides water for the operation of power units in Zlatoličje HPP. The hydroelectric power plant in Zlatoličje is the largest hydroelectric power plant in Slovenia and together with other HPPs on Drava produces 80 % of electricity from renewable sources.
